I’m still a learning artist so I can’t say my techniques are worth teaching others, so take this with a pinch of salt. ;P
I always start colouring with the flats; the standard colours that will define the picture. Then, I simply choose a darker colour and paint it over. When drawing a person, I always start with the nose for some reason, then I move on to the rest of the face.
So say, the skin colour is a light mix of light brown and some orange, I just choose a darker tint of that colour, and voila, you made yourself a shadow.
A very important note, you must always consider how strong your light source is. The darker shadows and bigger contrast, the stronger the light is and vice versa.
If you use photoshop, it is a good idea to learn how to use the blending tool. Choose a good brush to use it with, and choose scatter. It creates a really cool effect.
